Greenwich Village New York
Without a doubt, Greenwich Village is one of the most colorful neighborhoods in New York City. For generations, this has been the home to some of the most creative and literary minds in the world. The eccentricity that often accompanies greatness is deeply dyed in "the Village". Washington Park, with its magnificent memorial to the inauguration of America's first president, is a great place to start your visit to Greenwich Village. Street entertainers of every imaginable description roam the park. Coffee shops (some that reach back to the "beatnik" era that gave Greenwich Village international fame) and bistros are everywhere. By all means, walk. You want to soak in the colorful ambience and the checkered history of the community. This is where Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix lived and recorded. You can still find their albums (vinyl LP's) for sale at Bleedker Bob's Record Store - another fixture in the Village.
Fifty years ago this was the east-coast center of the American counter culture. Beatniks were replaced by hippies, who were replaced by radical experimental artists. Today, some of the most expensive real estate in the world is in Greenwich Village - and some of the best restaurants and night clubs in New York City. The tourists and New York University students who cram Washington Park and the surrounding streets no longer rub shoulders with musicians and artists, but with those who make the business deals that keep Manhattan in the center of the economic universe.
