Museum of the City of New York
Far more than an historical archive of America's principal city, the Museum of the City of New York feels more like the Smithsonian for it eclectic presentation of everything from toys, to stage costumes to the vehicles and sports memorabilia of yesteryear. The historical emphasis here is on the development of the culture of New York City and the life-style of its inhabitants. Historians will find enough material to satisfy them.
Documents and other items of interest that reach all the way back to the first Dutch settlers of "New Amsterdam". Other items in the collection include over 100,000 toys used by New York's youngest residents over the years, antique fire trucks, and one of the largest collections of stage costumes in the world. This is a great place to bring the kids, although they may have a hard time focusing on any single item - there is a great deal to see here. The Museum is located on 5th Avenue, just across the street from Central Park.
