New York Galleries
Aside from the well-known treasure houses like the
Met, the
Museum of Modern Art and the
Guggenheim, New York is home to dozens of outstanding galleries.
Henry Frick once resided in an 18th-century French-style mansion. Today the house is the home of his impressive art collection, which includes Titian, Vermeer, Rembrandt, El Greco, Goya, Whistler and more. New York City is also the home to the National Academy of Design, which has its own set of galleries, and the 8-story American Folk Art Museum with over 4,000 pieces on display.
Several museums feature contemporary works and provide exhibition space for up and coming artists. The
Whitney Museum of American Art is a unique museum designed as a 97-foot inverted pyramid with 30,000 square feet of exhibition space. Exhibits feature modern sculptures, paintings, photographs, drawing, films and videotapes. The New Museum of Contemporary Art focuses on experimental ideas and exhibits portraying the development of emerging artists, this unique museum's collection includes unusual, abstract art from around the world. The Queens Museum of Art regularly rotates their exhibitions which include pintings, films, family workshops, lectures and performances.
Of course, a number of the city's galleries are a bit more focused in their subject matter. The Dahesh Museum represents pre-Impressionist traditions, particularly Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo, and sponsors changing exhibits that focus on 19th- and 20th-century European academic art. The
Forbes Magazine Galleries are a testament to the eclectic tastes and hoarding instinct of Malcolm Forbes, founder of Forbes Magazine. Among the museums items are a number of early versions of the board game Monopoly, Faberge eggs and presidential memorabilia. Children's Museum of the Arts, is a great set of interactive workshops for kids, from puppet-making to storytelling by the "Brothers Grin." Another gallery that includes a heavy emphasis on participation and learning is the International Center of Photography, a combination museum, school and center devoted to photographers and the art of photography.
The final group of is made up of galleries that concentrate on particular ethnic groups or geographical regions of the world. The Neue Galerie New York displays works of art by German and Austrian artists and designers. El Museo del Barrio has exhibitions of works of different artists from Puerto Rico, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. African and African-American art is displayed at the Museum of African Art.
