Multi-millionaire John D. Rockefeller wanted to take a piece of undesirable real estate and turn it into a commercial center and a home for the Metropolitan Opera. The Great Depression made it impossible for him to realize his dream completely, but what he began here continues to be an economic and entertainment center that has become a New York City landmark. 19 buildings make up what is known as Rockefeller Center today. 30 Rockefeller Plaza was the first building constructed and is the centerpiece to the complex. For 70 years this has been the home of the American television network, NBC and some of its most popular programs are taped here. Tickets to tapings are available to the public.
The Center Gardens are an excellent place for a walk. Enjoy the artwork on your way to the eateries in the lower level. In the wintertime this area is converted to a large ice-skating rink. For a different eating experience, make your reservations to enjoy a meal at the Rainbow Room on the 65th floor. This New York tradition features fine cuisine and great views of the city below.
