The Guggenheim New York
As famous for the building itself as for the exhibitions that it houses, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is a showplace for contemporary art. The building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright to be a departure from traditional museums with their right angles and small galleries. One would be hard pressed to find a right angle here. An elevator takes visitors to the top of the museum, where they leisurely follow the downward spiral of a gentle slope that takes them past the various semi-open viewing areas.
Like most museums of its kind, the majority of pieces shown at the Guggenheim are on temporary display. However, the museum does have a fairly large permanent collection - many of which can be seen in the Thannhauser Collection. The museum also has a number of works by Picasso, Vasily Kandinsky, and Robert Mapplethorpe. The Museum is conveniently located just off of Central Park. Visitors are admitted on Fridays between 6 and 8 PM for a donation of any amount.
