Whitney Museum of American Art
What began as the private collection of the American sculptor Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, has grown into one of the most important collections of 20th century art in the world. The museum opened in Greenwich Village in 1930. Today it occupies its own monolith of a building on Madison Avenue. A large rotating permanent collection provides the basis for the museums offerings, but a number of temporary exhibitions continue to bring the world's best art to New York City. The Whitney Biennial - a major exhibition held on even numbered years - features the best artwork of the past years and has become a major event in the art world. On Friday nights the museum is a cross between an art gallery and a night club.
Music is selected by contemporary artists from their personal collections. On select Fridays you can enjoy the collection while listening to live music. The museum has also gone out of its way to be accommodating to families. If you are traveling with children be sure to ask for family cards - interactive cards that help introduce children to the world of art and provide an activity for the family to do together as they explore the treasures of the Whitney.
